This is a personal peice I'm working on. I went back to drawing fully fledged lines for once instead of straight painting like I have been. I forgot how much fun it is. Anyway I wanted to make this able to be cropped 2 different ways so that it could be a smaller vertical composition but then also a landscape with a character in the foreground to be used as a wallpaper or banner.

There are few things I would like critique on.

1. Does anything in the lines look awkward to the point where it may not be fixable when painted?

2. Does the smaller vertically cropped composition hold up with most of the sword cropped out?

3. If anyone has suggestions for a location or object of interest that I could put behind this character in the background I'd love to hear them. Right now I've pretty much just lightly sketched some rolling hills and large rocks and a cave but I feel like it could use something more like maybe huge pillars with glowing runes or something.

sometimes my dreams are like this, or worse. Decided to try some different inks. I used several layers of watercolor with salt to make the background texture. At first the texture was really pronounced, but after the third wash it became more blendy and the salt permanently bleached little spots which was kinda cool. Just a fun short thing to start summer.

John Joel Glanton - Blood Meridian

Blood Meridian has certainly become my favorite book recently and I felt the need to paint up another character last night. Was really pleased messing around in photoshop cs5 for the first time on this one. I like the new paint engine but it only feels useful for under paintings so far. I think the next step from here is going to be incorporating colored ink work with this sort of color.

Only one more character from the story I'm interested in doing a portrait of though, and that's Judge Holden. Not sure if anyone out there can ever do him justice. Link to my other blood meridian portrait. I really gotta start posting stuff other than study/quickies on here.

Slightly Revamped Look/A New Theme

It finally has happened and I've made a new template for the themes and although I can't get the text quite the same, and it is driving me absolutely mental, it's no longer "monsters". So for the few wondering when the next theme was going to be... the time is now. Seize the day!

For those unfamiliar with how this works: it's not a requirement, but an opportunity to post something. A general theme to stretch out your art muscles with and share whatever that is to you. It doesn't need to be a full fledged piece or anything, just have some fun with it.

Plan is to change it roughly every two weeks from this point on. So dream a bit extra tonight and draw something up for us to see, alright?

Quick Skyrim Excitement Paint

With the announcement of a new elder scrolls game, I just about went ahead and have insisted that the week of 11.11.11 will be spent playing nothing but Skyrim. Until then I've been eating the little scraps of information they've released about the game, and while listening to a podcast about it I painted this little speedie in photoshop.

About 30 minutes for this one. Man, that game cannot come soon enough. I'm sure I'll post more of these as more info comes out.

This is my final from my Children's Illustration class. We had to do a retelling of a classic story, poem or fairytale. Naturally, I did fairytale. As I sat and contemplated the many possibilities of the project, I ended up sketching a really sassy looking Gretel, and ran with it. So there you have it. I would really appreciate some critique! As of now, I'm not a big fan of:

* The Witch's shoes- They're so boring! I gotta jazz them up.

* Hansel's hands - Not very flattering shaping or stylization.

* The grass - Couldn't settle on a style or certain way to do the grass, any suggestions, hints, or tips?

* The background - The colors may be too chromatic? Is the green in the windows a little weird? And are those minty lollipops competing too much with the rest of the image?

All things I'll be attending to, but wanted to see if anyone had any ideas?

Hey Oondu community! This is Drew, a new blogger. Im really happy to be joining you guys and hope I can make some positive contributions to the blog!

Last summer I attended the Pre College program for Illustration and really got interested in the 3D Illustration department.

This is a Super Sculpey creature that I finished a while ago, and have been making a lot of these. I'm working towards getting them to respond to some sort of environment, but this guy is really more of a creature/character study.

I would really like your thoughts on this project, as well as on other projects that I post in the future!

This is my latest project for Design for IL.

The assignment was to create a composition that reciprocates in both color and shape. (basically something along the lines of a yin yang)

We drew words out of a can to see what our subject matter would be. I got Create/Destroy so I went with a theme of two mages creating golems to destroy each other :3

Here is about 5.5 hrs of work done in class. Just the flats for everything and starting to render the archway. The value shifts in the stone will probably be a little more subtle in the end. I experimenting with a couple new brushes for different textures I'm think this may lead to completely painted texture as apposed to stock photo texture overlays.

Hey everybody. This is a quick mock-up I did today for dimensional illustration. I'm thinking I'm probably going to make this either a larger sculpture or a sculpey figure (although, those of you who know me in real life also know I never work small). I guess I'm just looking for some feedback on design and such- I'm still a bit new at the whole monster creation thing. I was trying to achieve a sort of carnivorous aquatic animal who has devolved limbs because it relies more on its camouflage capabilities for feeding. I haven't worked out all the detail yet and I was thinking I might add some more plant-life, but I don't want to lose the viewer either in what it actually is.

This is a color/value study for a painting I am prepping in lieu of contest season, and I figured I would get some feedback if the community was willing. 8x10 about three hours, just trying to establish a feel and an atmosphere, something that I've been obsessed with lately. So Alan is pretty much done at this point unless you guys find anything wrong with him.

I just wanted to know what you guys think of Elyra's face and the way I did her scarf, I wanted to try to achieve a loose painterly feel with the flowing fabric altho I'm wondering if I should use a different brush.

Also now you can see better what the basic composition looks like. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Just figured I'd post what I've done so far on the painting ( It's gonna be a challenge to finish this before school starts XD) this is prolly 6 hrs or so. oh and don't worry, the hideous green light won't be quite that overpowering I just really wanted to remember that it's there :P

So far the goals I have for painting are as follows.

1. Paint stylized volumes realistically.

2. Loosen up the rendering where it calls for it (to show motion, and texture)

3. Experiment with different brushes.

so far I used a couple new brushes I made for the hair, and the cloth. (I'm pretty happy with the loose texture on the tunic.)

if you guys catch anything wrong with it at this still fairly early stage lemme know.

This is my attempt to do the following.

1. Make my lines more dynamic, and show more personality in my characters.

2. Improve the stylization of anatomy whilst keeping it fairly accurate.

3. Create a compact complex composition showing a battle in progress rather than the ever so popular (leading up to, charging at each other, what will happen scenario)

4. Reference more than just a couple artists at once. (Joe Maduriera, Humberto Ramos, Jim Cheung, Burne Hogarth)

Feedback would be great although I've worked on this for quite some time so I will probably only make minor edits if anyone finds something wrong. If anything really major is wrong chances are I'll save the thought for next time XD.

oh and this WILL be painted and I plan to set several goals for improvement for that process, just like I did with this one.

I'm still shaky on composition, especially that ship. I can't find reference of a historically accurate viking ship at the angle I need it so I may buy a model.

Uh, well, this is awkward. I was doing a study and it ended up as character design? Don't really know. Whatever the case, I really dig how the jacket came out so I'm thinking of maybe revamping it and taking out the hideous pink scarf (It was in the original reference and so I put it in initially and then just never got removed.)

Anyone else agree?

Hi everyone! This is my first post. Just thought I'd put up something I was working on, and maybe get some feedback on what I could work on??? Originally I was going to just overlay the colors over the scanned drawing, but didn't like the face so I went ahead and painted it. I'm going to be doing the same with the thighs so the face does not stand out so much just fyi. Anywho, I hope ya like it!!

Also, if anyone has suggestions on how to make a good brush, it would be greatly appreciated!

*made some revisions. Honestly I dont know what kind of material it is??? i can tell a few things are metal, but some look like leather. thanks for the tips!! Btw, the other picture is NOT mine, but reference.

The MAW! one of my many villains, The Maw was born a disfigured child, with grey sickening skin, grotesque proportions and most importantly a large gaping maw (mouth) where his stomach would be. Along with extremely corrosive saliva and a digestive system capable of dissolving anything from adamantium to fleshy human skin. The Maw eats whatever his heart (or taste buds) desires, cars, buildings or people. Nothing is safe from his powerful yet incredibly disturbing jaws.

Well, it's been a while since I have posted on here, but I have an excuse, which is keeping busy in NYC while interning at Jim Henson's Creature shop. It has been a lot of fun so far and is a really great work environment. Although, I can't really show anything I've been working on at the shop because of NDA contracts, I can show a personal sculpt I've been working on in my free time. It's from a design I did for a story in the fall semester of illustrative drawing. I've been wanting to sculpt him since then and finally got around to it. I have been doing a lot of research on animatronics and stop motion lately and plan on making him into a posable foam latex stop motion puppet. I am also getting pumped for a Creature Design & Sculpture class I will be taking in August with Jordu Schell, who was the lead designer on Avatar and has worked on many other films like MIB, Planet of the Apes, Aliens, and Hellboy. http://www.schellstudio.com
