I'm working on a little Christmas present for my sister. I've always wanted to try a black and white grisaille with color glazes. The grisaille is still a WIP, I know the hand is still super wanky.
Does anyone know anything about color glazing? Or would anyone have a list of transparent pigments?

I would know nothing of the technique. But I can say it is looking really good except for that hand which sticks out because the rest is so awesome. I believe alex and whoever else was in his methods class HAD to learn that technique or something akin to it... so I would expect him to be helpful... like I'm not being.
One thing that is unclear to me is if that is her arm being reflected in a table? Or is it her other arm... if it's the beginnings of her other arm... she has a really long arm. Not that there is anything wrong with that... if her arm is really long.
Ummmm color glazing... Well the ONLY time did it, I know you need to layer thin and keep the color bright because a lot gets deluded from the water/mat medium what ever. One thing can say is that where you have dark black contrast and you want to keep it that way be clean about it. Though it doesn't look like you have a problem with that, its looking pretty tight. But when you glaze over any of your dark's with acrylics(if that's what you are using, that's what i used.) It will cover opaque pretty quickly. and I think...it works better if you cover the gray scale with a mat medium before you glaze, to seal it first...haha umm Maybe Jake will see this and set something in stone I think he has the most "traditional" experience.
As far as the rest goes the only thing that causes me discomfort is the way the right arm just vanishes, assuming that is is just unseen behind the other arm...It needs to peak out somewhere i think, for a more natural feel. The rest(stiff hand aside) is looking clean. kudos.
Oh! On a side note, there is this stuff looks like colored inks, but its concentrated watercolor, more it's just more dense pigment but it's just like ink. I have neversedit for glazing, but it maybe something to look into.
Hey man. Looking really good so far. Anything critique-wise that I would say about it has already been said. From the looks of it, I'd say you're using oils, right? Off the top of my head, the only transparent pigments I can think of (that I have) are ultramarine, dioxazine purple, viridian green, and alizarin crimson. Those are the ones that I have that I'm pretty sure are transparent. If you haven't though, I'm sure you could find a complete list online somewhere. As far as glazing goes, it's something I've always really wanted to try too, but never really felt like I had enough time to do. I never oil painted before coming to CCAD, so I figure you probably have more experience than I do with it (based on the work that I've seen from last year, too). Maybe I'll start a piece some time though....
