It's been a while......

Hey all. Glad to see everyone keeping up with their work! It just keeps getting better and better every time I come out here. It took a loooong time, but I finally somehow worked up the motivation to try and finish a painting. So here's a little piece I started working on during the school year and didn't really get a chance to finish until summer. I'm not really sure how I feel about it and I don't have any idea what it means, but it's at a point where I feel comfortable calling it mostly finished. Anyway, see what you guys think and keep up the sweet work!

Cool image!

Love the concept and design-- now what do you mean you don't have any idea what it means?

I'll often see people say this about their surrealistic work and have a hard time imagining one coming up with something that seems symbolic and iconic, without actually being so.
What was your thought process in deciding to make this painting in the first place?

Hey thanks guys! I used oil paints over an acrylic underpainting on cold press illustration board. The piece itself is like 5"x9" so it's pretty darn small.

As for the concept. Well...way back when I had started it, I think I was wanting to just go for sort of an HR Giger type of surrealism. But getting back into it, I just sort of got caught up in playing with different patterns between the technical and the organic. Not to mention my colors are just way too chromatic to be anything "Giger-ish". But as for whether the piece itself means anything, well I guess I'll just leave that up to the viewer to interpret if they want.

very nice painting Jake. I especially enjoy the peacock feathers looking like monster eyes and the green tendrils becoming circuitry. What I get from this piece, and maybe im way off, is that humans are a triumph of form and function and I think that there is a certain give and take between the two just like how feathers are beautiful but geometric and circuitry and mechanics are the same.... but maybe you were just painting, either way, GOOD JOB!!!

Thanks Phil. Glad you like it. I really dig your interpretation. Maybe I'll make that the official theme of this piece - that is unless it's copyrighted material. :P
