John Joel Glanton - Blood Meridian

Blood Meridian has certainly become my favorite book recently and I felt the need to paint up another character last night. Was really pleased messing around in photoshop cs5 for the first time on this one. I like the new paint engine but it only feels useful for under paintings so far. I think the next step from here is going to be incorporating colored ink work with this sort of color.

Only one more character from the story I'm interested in doing a portrait of though, and that's Judge Holden. Not sure if anyone out there can ever do him justice. Link to my other blood meridian portrait. I really gotta start posting stuff other than study/quickies on here.

Quick Skyrim Excitement Paint

With the announcement of a new elder scrolls game, I just about went ahead and have insisted that the week of 11.11.11 will be spent playing nothing but Skyrim. Until then I've been eating the little scraps of information they've released about the game, and while listening to a podcast about it I painted this little speedie in photoshop.

About 30 minutes for this one. Man, that game cannot come soon enough. I'm sure I'll post more of these as more info comes out.

Please... discuss. And apologies for pretty much not updating the theme in a very, very long time. That's because I lost a harddrive soon after the redesign, and all the files are now gone. Instead of just editing it I told myself I was just gonna overhaul the header and stuff, but never got around to it.

Prohibition and Inhibition

My latest illu for groff, based around the prohibition era. Since I missed class I figured I'd share. Love doing these ink drawings. Think I'll do more.

Gonna get around to changing that theme over there pretty soon. Just have to find my template .psd and finish some work first.

Bad Moon Rising

Here's my 60's song assignment for Groff. I didn't really have a particular song in mind while doing this... pretty much just wanted to do a Vietnam picture. It turned out to be a bit of a rush job, but in the process I ended up with quite the collection of self shot and found vietnam reference.

I can't believe I finished this one. An hour ahead of schedule. Gotta start getting ready for class, but this was my personal piece for Groff's professional practices class. Wish I had another day to work on it, tighten it up, balance some more, and add to it but I'm all out of time.

Definitely pitched a bigger project than I was able to deliver with all the other stuff going on.

Two Characters

Last night I challenged Kevin Havens to a quick Photoshop Character battle. Each had one hour to draw a zombie survivor. After that one, we were both feeling productive still and kevin named the catagory comic book nerd. Good times were had. Although I forgot to shake my can of yoohoo before opening it, and I had a bad taste in my mouth the entire second round.

An Undertaker and Abe

Well, it's been a terribly long time since I've posted something on here myself, so here's two of my most recent projects for those who don't ever check out my personal blog. Both of these ended up being those projects that in the end you are happy with, but somewhere in the middle you wanted to scrap. Anyways, top is Groff's Professional Practices assignment, and the bottom is for Payne's Illustration Seminar class.

A little something

Trying out a new kind of coloring style. Just got so bored doing things the way I was, so hopefully this gets me really going on something. Plan is to start a digital comic in this style that I'll post page by page on my blog, or in sets of pages. Haven't decided yet. But it will be full color like this. This just went so fast.

Riot.

About time I posted something here. I try to keep sketch-a-days off of here, but I always forget to post finals on here. So, I'm posting this. Let me know what you think. I'm aware of some general wonkiness, but I'm far too sick of the thing to go back in and make fixes.

It's about a riot on tvs. Because when set out loud, I thought that sounded awesome. Took forever for me to scan this thing. Not even sure when I finished the drawing at this point.

Anyway. Hi. Expect a news post on here soon, and maybe a new look if I could ever decide what I want to do with this place. It's feeling stale, and to be honest I never got the chance to finish this layout due to homework. I'll announce this again, but I added the very awesome, Alex Lyon, to the administrators list on here and he is responsible for finally getting out some more invites. Thanks Alex.

Well. I got a bunch of portraits here. Just to kind of post something. It's been a pretty long time since I have. I'm pretty dang burnt out on doing males. Also, I've gotten a rare itch to do something with more background than character. I hope I can do something with it.

Got some stuff, if you've popped over to my blog, you've seen. Just kind of picked my favorites. Stuff from black and white, styles, sketch-a-days, and sketch-to-death. 

Small note: I've been entirely lazy about getting out invites. I've been putting it off for months. Sorry if I've told you I'm going to send you one, and haven't.

Here's my black and white assignment I marathoned today. Feels really good to have finished this one, and have it turn out a fair bit better than I thought it would. Here's to hoping when i go to print tomorrow that screen-tone doesn't just turn grey. 

Glad to see people are digging the layout. Before I forget, I just wanted to say, you can all feel free to tag your posts with your name, so if you ever want to pull up someone's work, we can just sort by the tag by clicking on it. I thought I had mentioned it before, but now that I think about it, I don't think I have.

Been doing stuff.

So, I've been doing a sketch like this everyday.  A few more at my own blog. Be sure to check it out. So far I've been ok at throwing up a new one per day.

Also, I really need to update that theme over there. Can't find the template I had. Any ideas on what to put up next? I was thinking something fun like robots or sci-fi in general. Just started watching Eureka. Could be attributed to that.

Also, apologies for ignoring this place over the holidays, and not getting up the weekly themes. Been a hectic break, even though it hasn't been all that hectic at all. 

Japanese Ghosts

EDIT: So, I took a screenshot and the colors are fine it seems. Photoshop is doing something weird with color profiles. For shame.

I've been doing a speedpaint per day of break. Here's three of them I kind of designed to go together. All of them were rather quick, except for the fat man, who I got caught up rendering the face of.  

I have a few other little things, but they are more practices in some more dynamic drawing than anything. These are more, easy concepting, and me going back to my old brushes for a bit.

Sidenote: The colors dulled quite a bit again when blogger got it's teeth on this. Anyone know why? My actual png is fine. Did it my last post too. It's really annoying. I can pull up the png in preview, and hold next to this, and it is noticeably greyer... it's always done it alittle, but now it's really messing with my pictures.

Why I don't do happy things.

I must say... was pretty miserable doing this one. Hate how it came out. Posting it anyway to document that I can actually do smiles. Colors dimmed when it was compressed. AH WELL.

On an unrelated note... I need to do something with feet.

Edit: My buddy came over and took a photo for me. This is what is going to print more or less for class. It's a bit saturated, but a much closer representation to what I have in real life.

The don... is not finished. But finished to the point of being able to visit Mr. Boley, and persuading him. If you know what I mean.

And not in the sexy sort of way. 

I'd say the face is the only thing really on it's way. Literally everything else is very WIP. Oh, it's all acrylics thus far. Again no ref. So don't pick on the hands too much. I will indeed be shooting reference. Gonna use my dads hands. But he's three hours away.

New Comic Page

Just finished this up tonight. The second comic book page of my 13 wives story. Technically not the second page in the whole story, but for the class, it is the second page. It's annoying to me that I can't ink it. I really, really want to ink it. It would be so much easier to read without that visual noise. Lemme know what you think. Not a whole lot happens on this page, it's mainly just a intro page for this character.

Quick Edit: A speedie I did as a warm-up for today, before I get painting. Started it last night when I couldn't sleep, added highlights and a few more scribbles today.

Finished it up as much as I will for class. Getting this to print halfway correctly will require an act of god. Lot of things I wish I could do, fix and work on, but I have to crank out another painting tommorrow and tonight I have to get some more LA class stuff done. Figured I would just throw it up on here.
